National Survey To Assess Painkiller Habits, UK

People using over-the-counter or prescribed painkillers at least monthly for aches and pains, or for an injury or medical condition, are needed to take part in a University of Derby survey.

A team of psychologists has embarked on a study to build up a UK-wide picture of the nation's habits, when it comes to consuming over-the-counter and prescription pain medication. The research is led by Professor James Elander and Joana Duarte, a researcher working with the University under a Leonardo da Vinci scheme research scholarship.

They want to get a better idea of the things that affect how people use painkillers, and the types of concerns or issues that people might have with their use of painkillers. For example, becoming dependent or addicted to painkillers, or suffering more pain than they need because they are fearful of taking pills.

People wishing to take part in the survey, which will only take a short time, should fill out the online questionnaire at website. It will help the team build up a comprehensive picture of our nation's use of painkillers in the community. The deadline for taking part in the survey is July 31 (2010).

The findings could help the University work with pharmacies to form guidelines for consumers about the optimum use of painkillers, or help consumers decide if they have a problem with using too many drugs and where to go to for help.

Professor James Elander, an expert in the psychological analysis of chronic pain and head of the University's Centre for Psychological Research, said: "We have had the tragic high profile case of pop icon Michael Jackson and his alleged addiction to prescription painkillers, and other high profile celebrity cases involving prescription drugs.

"However, many people use painkillers that are either prescribed by their doctor or bought over-the-counter, and much less is known about painkiller use by people in the general population.

"We hope this study will generate a lot of interest and we would be very grateful if people could spend a short amount of time filling in this online questionnaire.

"It could provide findings to inform us how society can help boost the wellbeing of people, by helping them use painkillers more effectively."
